Last summer we visited George Washington Birthplace NM in the Northern Neck of Virginia, and we had fun exploring the area. There’s lots to do, though this is not an exhaustive list, and well worth the visit if you will be in the area or are looking for a vacation destination.
9 Fun things to do near Colonial Beach, VA
1. Go for a hike on the sandy trails through the woods of Westmoreland State Park on your way to the beach to hunt for fossilized shark teeth. Such a fun hike!
2. Hunt for fossilized shark teeth along the beach at Westmoreland state park. We weren’t successful in finding any shark teeth, but other people nearby found some.
3. Bring or rent a kayak or canoe and do some boating on the Potomac River in Westmoreland State Park. We didn’t bring our kayaks, but we had a boogie board that the kiddos had fun with.
4. Learn some history and help your kiddo(s) earn another Junior Ranger badge through the Junior Ranger program at George Washington Birthplace National Monument.
5. Learn more history by taking a ranger tour at George Washington Birthplace NM. We toured the replica house, which was quite interesting. The original house where George Washington was born is no longer around, but the foundation has been marked.
6. Hike the trails on the grounds of George Washington Birthplace NM. Cross the wood bridge over the inlet and follow the trail along the Potomac River. We saw a heron of some sort hanging out in the shallows along the river. (I wrote a little more about the hiking trails in this post)
7. Drive down the road a few minutes and Stratmore House, the birthplace of Robert E Lee. (entrance and tour fee information) Tour the house, check out the hiking trails, the public beach, the Visitor Center, the gardens, and more.
8. Visit the second longest public beach in Virginia in the town of Colonial Beach.
9. Go berry picking at Westmoreland Berry Farm (check their growing calendar before your visit). They also have goats!
