The Side Hustle Spotlight series are interviews with people who share their side hustles, how they got started, and how their side hustle has helped them achieve their travel dreams. Side hustles are not one size fits all, so these spotlights give a glimpse into the pros and cons of those side hustles.

Our next interview is with Breanne, who is a fellow homeschooling mama of three kiddos and a piano teacher.

What is your side hustle?

I teach piano to thirteen children.

How long have you been doing it?

About 4-5 years.

How many hours a day/week did you spend on it in the beginning?

1 hour a week.

How many hours a day/week do you spend on it now?

4 hours a week.

Is the money you earned worth the time you spent on it? Why or why not?

Yes, I really enjoy teaching.

How long did it take to earn your first paycheck?

Once I started teaching, I began getting paid. The only wait time was finding students.

Are there any requirements or restrictions that might keep others from starting this side hustle?

You need to know how to play the piano. You need to be good with children.

Did you do any training or take any courses before you started?

I earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education with a minor in music. This isn’t necessary, of course, but you do need to know how to play music and how to teach children.

How do you bring in new students?

I posted on an online home-school forum advertising piano lessons. The response was overwhelming. I also have gained some students by word-of-mouth. Piano lessons tend to be in demand in all the areas I have lived. I have more people interested than I am willing to teach.

Were there any other costs associated with starting your side hustle?

Well, I own a piano. Also, I invested in a few piano books- I use the Alfred series. My students buy their own books, but I buy Christmas music to share with them.

What do you like best about what you do?

Interacting with the children and watching them learn and progress. I also like having extra spending money.

What is your least favorite part?

Some children do not practice and can be tiresome to teach.

Would you recommend this side hustle to others?

Yes! (If you play the piano!)

Any tips or words of encouragement to share with my readers?

You do not need to be a concert pianist in order to teach beginners. I would say that teaching ability and patience with children is far more important than musical expertise.
