Whether you have celiac disease like Sunshine and I or just avoid gluten because you feel better when you don’t eat it, it can be difficult to find safe foods when traveling.
We have some favorite gluten-free snacks we like to eat when we are on road trips. Now, some of the snacks on this list are definitely treats that we don’t eat on a regular basis. But part of the road trip experience is road trip snacks, music, and audiobooks. (our favorite audiobooks)
I’ve included sweet and savory snacks in this list because we like both. We don’t eat a lot of sweets, so they’re a fun treat to have, but we also like to keep things more balanced with a variety of food groups.
We use cups to dole out appropriate portions for each kiddo. They’re more reusable than a Ziploc baggie, though they may result in more spills than a baggie.
Our Favorite Gluten-Free Road Trip Snacks
1. M&Ms
The kids like plain, I prefer peanut and peanut butter.
2. Jelly Belly jellybeans
Jeremy and I like to eat these individually, though the kiddos just eat them by the handful. If you’re trying to decide what flavor each one is, add a layer of difficulty by eating them in the dark when you’re driving at night 🙂
3. YumEarth Gummy Bears
We like these for hiking and road trips and they are an easy treat to keep on hand. I buy the bulk bags so we don’t run out too soon. We like the gummy bear flavors better than the fruit snack flavors, but the fruit snacks are softer and easier to chew, if that’s an important factor for you.
4. Lay’s Stax
Pringles have wheat starch, but Stax are gluten-free. For some reason, these always find their way into the shopping cart when we travel.
5. Doritos
Cool Ranch and Nacho Cheese are our favorites.
6. Simply Cheetos
Well, they’re as natural as you can get with Cheetos 😉 These at least don’t have Day-Glo orange powder to get on everything.
7. Snyder’s Gluten Free Pretzels
Good crunch and mouthfeel. It’s not always easy to find those in gluten-free foods, but these do a good job.
8. Vans Say Cheese! Crackers
There are a few snacks I miss from my gluten eating days, and Cheez-its is one of them. These come closest in flavor, though the texture is quite different. The Fire Roasted Veggie crackers are good as well.
9. Apples
The boys love whole apples, but I’ll sometimes slice them while we’re stopped or buy packages of pre-sliced apples.
10. Applesauce packets
The squeezie packets eliminate the need for a spoon and kiddos learn pretty quickly not to squeeze too hard. These are super easy for the driver to eat while still driving safely.
11. Grapes
Grapes are easy finger food and easy to divide up.
12. Baby Bel cheese
The individually wrapped cheeses are perfect for handing around to everyone. You do have to watch that the wax wrapping gets put in the trash and not left on a cushion or carpet.
13. String cheese
String cheese is also individually wrapped and easy to eat, and the packaging doesn’t make as much of a mess as the Baby Bel wrapping.
14. Yogurt tubes
We actually prefer to put the yogurt tubes in the freezer. The frozen yogurt is less messy and the kids think they’re getting a popsicle.
15. Epic meat bars
These come in a variety of flavors (my favorite is the bison bacon cranberry). These are perfect when you need a hit of protein to stabilize your blood sugar after eating too many sweets. Or pair with some cheese and fruit for a quick and easy lunch.

This list is by no means comprehensive (I’ll think of more as soon as I hit publish), but they do find their way on most of our road trips. Do you have any favorite road trip snacks that are gluten-free?
